This is a one day workshop that focuses on quilt design and composition, in particular exploring variations of the traditional ‘log cabin’ or ‘housetop’ pattern and the use of dark and light tones to create impact.

This day is perfect for people who want to gain confidence with choosing colours and ways to put those colours together for the best effect.

Learners will gain inspiration and connection from quilting’s rich history by looking at selected pieces and referencing the work of the Gees Bend and Amish Quilting communities.

You will explore the work of selected artists to consider the importance of observation, pattern and colour in our design choices, before getting hands on with practical design.

Begin your understanding by using paper collaging design options before moving onto fabric, you will be guided through the technique of ‘strip piecing’ pre cut strips of light and dark fabric to build a single hand stitched 18” x 18” block ready to baste, hand quilt and bind.

Supported by discussion and demonstrations, you will leave the workshop with an understanding of the making of a quilt from start to finish using this approach, and the skills to enjoy completing your own quilting project.

You will learn to:
– Cut fabric with scissors & rotary cutter and mat
– Strip piece fabric to construct a quilt
– Make a quilt sandwich
– Make a choice of wadding and why it matters
– How to use sashing and borders; what are these and how are they used in design choices.
– Select stitching choices – levels of embellishment
– How to finish the quilt

All materials and use of tools are included but it will be helpful to bring a notebook so you can personalise your notes and sketch ideas.

We will provide:

– Pre-cut 100% cotton fabric strips dark & light hues

– Needles and thread for hand sewing

– Coloured paper / for collaging

– Cotton Muslin & Wadding
