Join us for one of our fascinating workshops as we delve into the fabulous world of upholstery.
Professional upholsterers Louise Richardson, Rachael South, Jan Dodd and Sally Mollett teach a selection of upholstery courses – each will give you a wonderful introduction to this traditional and practical craft and leave you with the confidence and skills to tackle new projects on your own.
All of our upholstery classes are for absolute beginners. It doesn’t matter which one you choose to take first. Each technique that is offered is part of all the processes every upholsterer has to learn.
In Intro to Upholstery – 1 Day you will use all the specialist tools to learn how to unpick, take apart and replace a worn paneled seat to transform your tired furniture into raving beauties. You can bring nothing or a simple modern dining chair or just the seat pad with you. Send us a photo if you aren’t sure if it’s appropriate. We can’t always know if it is too complex to complete your own project in a day, but we supply all tools, materials and fabrics for everyone to take away a chair sized pad you have upholstered.
KEY PROJECT: MODERN FOAM FILLED DROP-IN SEAT.
Our Intro to Traditional Upholstery – Weekend or Evenings workshop – Make your own fabulous footstool from the frame up – finished with wooden feet ready for you to stain or paint. This gives you the opportunity to embark on a more substantial project using traditional materials including twill webbing, hessian, vegetable fibre, animal hair and calico. You can select a top fabric from a selection at the centre, or use something you have. You will need about a metre of your own fabric if you choose to bring your own. We supply the wood frame. Final project 400mm x 300mm.
KEY PROJECT: TRADITIONALLY STUFFED with STITCHED EDGED FOOTSTOOL.
In Intro to Modern Upholstery – Weekend workshop you will make a funky footstool from the frame up – finished with wooden feet ready for you to paint, wax or stain. You will learn a modern take on the classic form of deep buttoned upholstery using a foam built form. From making the buttons, forming the foam and pleating the fabric, you will learn a selection of new upholstery skills in this weekend workshop. You will use about a metre of your own fabric if you choose to bring your own. We supply the wood frame. Final project 540mm x 360mm.
KEY PROJECT: MODERN FOAM with DEEP BUTTONED CONSTRUCTION FOOTSTOOL.
In Hand Caning Furniture you will learn a traditional craft, sometimes known as hand, strand or hole-to-hole caning. During the one day workshop, you will be guided through the six stages of intertwining the fine split canes, completing a small frame that we supply, learning new skills to enable you to embark on your own project at home.
KEY PROJECT: HAND CANED WOOD FRAME.
Join us for Bring your own Chair, our in depth 12 week class with experienced tutor Louise Richardson, which allows you time to strip down and recover a (pre-approved) chair of your own to work on each week. Because we have limited storage space, it helps us to know what chair you intend to bring. Please send us a photo of the chair you wish to bring. You can leave the chair with us during the course.
KEY PROJECT: RE-UPHOLSTERING YOUR OWN CHAIR.
Our ‘One Year Upholstery Course‘ is for anyone who wishes to learn all of the initial practical skills associated with becoming a professional upholsterer. The course covers the basics of both traditional and modern processes taught by experienced professional upholsterers throughout your learning, with each one teaching you their specialist skills to ensure you have an overall grounding.
If you have longed to try upholstery for yourself then any of our workshops will be suitable for you. In these practical courses, there will be plenty of time in our small classes for practicing all the key processes.. Bring photos of your own furniture projects to ask questions.
“I really enjoyed the footstool upholstery course. Thanks to you and Jan for the fantastic course. Such a good idea to do this project as an introduction to upholstery.”
Use fabric of your own, or use one of our selection of upholstery fabrics at the centre. The use of all tools and materials is included (apart from ‘Bring Your Own Chair’, where you pay as you use materials).
We also have a selection of tools and materials that we use in our workshops for sale at the Centre for you to continue your new hobby at home.
