About: Work with a contemporary and rich colour palette of high quality linen yarns and sets of wooden tassel moulds, learning to make your own linen or pom pom tassel.
Passementerie – tassels, trimmings, cord braids and fringes have been designed and made in small specialised workshops since the mid 17th century. It is only in recent years that this obscure craft has been introduced to textile artists and enthusiasts.
Passementerie is an endangered craft and there are very few specialists in Britain with the skill and knowledge to create such beautiful furnishing trimmings. We are fortunate to have Anna Crutchley teaching our workshops at The Goodlife Centre. We offer two different passementerie workshops:
Pom-Pom Tassels
In this one-day course you will be using a contemporary and rich colour palate of high quality rayon, cotton and wool yarns, and learning basic tassel making techniques, such as how to roll a wooden tassel mould with gimp, make a set of colourful pompoms (using a cunning and quick technique) and assemble the whole tassel with a ruff at the waist. The tassel is finished off with a 3 or 4 strand suspension cord and you will learn the fascinating craft of how to make twisted cord using a special four-hook cord-twisting tool.
Linen Tassels
Working with a contemporary and rich colour palette of high quality linen yarns and sets of wooden tassel moulds, you will learn the traditional techniques for making an elegant multiple mould tassel. You will be using basic methods such as how to roll a wooden tassel mould with cord, cover a mould vertically with yarn, make a wired cut skirt, and assemble the whole tassel with a 3 or 4 strand suspension cord. You will also learn the fascinating craft of how to spin cords using a special four-hook cord-twisting tool.
The use of all tools and materials is included.
Anna Crutchley
Anna Crutchley is a designer-maker of passementerie (tassels, cords braids and fringes) which she makes to order for interior decorators, furniture restorers, soft furnishers and upholsterers. She researches into techniques and styles of trimmings that have been used in interiors since the 17th century, but also has an eye for a contemporary look. She is a trained teacher and author of books on tassel making – her latest edition Decorative Tassels and How to Make Them is available at the centre.

Refreshments
Coffee, tea and biscuits are included in the course fee, but you will need to bring lunch with you or visit a nearby venue to purchase food.
Access
If you have any specific access or special needs, please contact us confidentially in advance by email info@thegoodlifecentre.co.uk. There is a small step to the entrance, and the toilet is on the ground floor.
All sewing workshops and occasionally lampshade making, tassel making and bookbinding workshops are located on the second floor. There is no lift access.
