New Courses in Traditional Crafts: Antique Furniture Restoration, Passementerie, Woodcarving ‘In the Round’, Furniture Caning, Basketry and Deep Button Upholstery
The Goodlife Centre in Waterloo today announced some brand new workshops for 2013, building on their popular niche of home maintenance and high-end decorative arts classes. Courses in Antique Furniture Restoration, Passementerie (the making of tassels and trimmings), Woodcarving ‘In the Round’, Furniture Caning, Basketry and Deep Button Upholstery are all being added to an already packed and popular schedule of workshops designed to champion traditional skills to busy but creative Londoners.
Antique Furniture Restoration
Designed to give beginners the skills and knowledge to repair and restore antiques, the 10 week course covers wood and joint repairs, veneer removal and repairs, French polishing and surface decoration. At the end of the course learners will better understand the techniques required for traditional restoration and the materials involved in the process.

Woodcarving ‘In the Round’
Designed for both beginners and intermediates alike this 12 week course focuses on how to carve in three dimensions (3D, ‘in the round’), working primarily on one block of timber to produce a finished sculpture. By the end of the course, learners will understand sharpening techniques, timber identification, planning & carving in the round, and finally surface finishes.

Passementerie: Tassel Making
Tassels and trimmings have been designed and made in small specialised workshops since the mid 17th century. It is only in recent years that this obscure craft has been introduced to textile artists and enthusiasts. This two-day workshop looks at traditional techniques of making a full-size tassel for interior decoration. Students will work with a contemporary and rich colour palate of high quality linen yarns to learn basic techniques.

Furniture Caning
An old traditional upholstery craft, sometimes known as hand, strand or hole-to-hole caning. During the one day workshop, upholstery expert Rachael South will inspire confidence while guiding learners through the stages of intertwining the fine split canes. After which, they will be able to snap up a junk shop bargain and re-cane a chair back to its former glory.
1 Day Weekend Workshop. Sunday 10th March or Saturday 4th April. Cost: £165. Use of tools and basic materials included.
Basket Weaving
Basketry is the new baking, according to Jamie Oliver and Kirstie Allsop. This this one day workshop guides students through the process of making a bread basket sized beauty in rustic rush to display oven fresh wares.

Deep Button Upholstery
A new version of our popular Upholster a Footstool workshop – focusing on the key process of Deep Buttoning. From making the buttons, forming the foam and pleating the fabric, students will make their own deep buttoned luxury footstool to take home and wow their friends and family.
2 Day Weekend Workshop. Saturday 9th February. Cost: £325. Use of tools and basic materials included.
