Laptops & Printers Revived by The Restart Project Technicians
Sunday’s Repair Café at The Goodlife Centre was another fun filled afternoon – full to the brim with Londoners dropping in with household items to be repaired, recycled and reused on the spot at the free, monthly event. Part of Waste Less, Live More Week, September’s Repair Cafe certainly lived up to its billing as a community project as many other social and environmental projects joined forces to spread the word, share the love and soak up the atmosphere.
This time the on-site repair squad expanded. Regular DIY tutors at The Goodlife Centre, Alison and Scott were joined by Ugo and the team from The Restart Project, who were able to handle some delicate fixing of a printer and several laptops. Linda Galvin from environmental network, Freecycle and Jill from The Jerwood Space in Bankside came to offer their support, whilst Abigail from Waterloo Women’s Network kept visitors and fixers supplied with tea and homemade cake. The Waterloo workspace was a-buzzing with an industrious spirit of doing something worthwhile.
As tea was served, and mellow jazz played, the random offerings of Londoners who came with their down-at-heel items were embraced. A chair was fixed that had lost a grommet, a table needed a new washer and even a ‘fascinator’ with an unfurling ribbon was fixed up to re-enter the fickle world of fashion.
Once again, glue turned out to be the hero in many cases and as it is Alison’s specialist subject, everything that was diagnosed as needing it was given expert treatment. Scott loves taking electrical things apart and won a round of applause when the grinder he was tackling burst into life after he had fixed the switch – Chris and Maggie travelled all the way from Putney to bring forth that particular challenge.

About Repair Cafe
Repair Café is a community project first developed in Holland, which encourages people to repair, reuse and recycle their possessions to reduce waste and reverse the rise of a disposable culture. Londoners are encouraged to bring-in transportable broken household items to Repair Café for assessment, and if deemed repairable by the organisers, can start making their repairs in the Repair Café. DIY, carpentry and electrical experts from The Goodlife Centre are on stand-by to advise and a selection of tools and materials are made available for use.
