About: Bring your portable musical instrument and learn how to fix surface damage and repair simple faults in modern or vintage instruments.
This workshop is a rare opportunity to bring your portable musical instrument to the centre and have an opportunity to learn how to fix surface damage and repair simple faults in modern or vintage instruments.
Each instrument will be evaluated before work begins. The tutor will also give a professional appraisal and in most cases a financial evaluation on any potential project.
Suitable instruments may include: string instruments (banjos, mandolins, ukuleles, guitars, balalikas, lap steels), autoharps, irish whistles, renaissance woodwind, accordions, concertinas, bagpipe, harmonicas as well as basic analog electronics and various non european folk instruments.
The tutor can also teach how to reskin ethnic or kit drums and how to tune or retune a harmonica to your own tastes or how to properly string and set up a guitar. You can in many cases straighten warped necks even if they dont have a truss rod.
It would be helpful to send in photos and details of anything really unusual before hand to assess suitability.
Please note: we can’t store instruments except when a clamping or glueing process requires leaving the instrument behind.

Jon has over 30 years experience of researching, making and restoring numerous instruments including bagpipe, harmonicas, string instruments (banjos, mandolins, ukuleles, guitars, balalikas, lap steels), autoharps, irish whistles, renaissance woodwind, accordions, concertinas, basic analog electronics and various non europen folk instruments.
Jon has spend decades researching ethnomusicology and the evolution of early popular music from the mid 19th century to the mid 20th century. He is a collector of historical sheet music and instrument methods.

Refreshments
Coffee, tea and biscuits are included in the course fee, but you will need to bring lunch with you or visit a nearby venue to purchase food.
Access
If you have any specific access or special needs, please contact us confidentially in advance by email info@thegoodlifecentre.co.uk. There is a small step to the entrance, and the toilet is on the ground floor.
All sewing workshops and occasionally lampshade making, tassel making and bookbinding workshops are located on the second floor. There is no lift access.
