About: In response to many requests to offer our workshops outside central London, we offer our popular ‘DIY Drills’ workshop as online videos to watch at home.
Relax and watch our expert and entertaining tutor Moira Tighe as she demonstrates and explains all the processes to become proficient with a drill so you can tackle all those DIY tasks. The videos are filmed professionally with clear sound and detailed closeups so that you wont miss a thing.
The video is split into five detailed sessions. You can watch these sections at any time. We show you how to tackle lots of basic home tasks that need a drill to accomplish them. This course is perfect for new homeowners who have just realised that the purchase didn’t include a landlord and for anyone who is tired of waiting for someone else to get round to those little jobs around the house. It’s an empowering life skill for everyone.
This course will empower you to become confident when drilling into wood, brick and tile without the fear of damaging your walls or hitting water or electricity. You will be able to hang anything on any wall- curtains, hooks, blinds, pictures, shelves and even heavier objects like TVs and cabinets.
Print out the accompanying course notes with handy photos and names of all the tools and materials we use and settle down to enjoy five sessions of learning. Enjoy watching an online course with Moira, who will help you demystify the maddening and frustrating world of attaching things to any wall.
You will be led along a path that will unveil the mysteries of drill bits, wall fixings and screws. We will show you how to detect what lies behind the walls in your home. You don’t need muscle. You need ‘know how’.
Session 1. Choosing a drill. Get ready (16mins)
We will show you all the features on a drill to help you choose your own if you intend to purchase one. Don’t worry if you have no tools at all, as we will introduce you to each one as we use them and provide a wish list in the accompanying notes so you can start building a toolkit to last a lifetime.
Session 2. Screws and drills love wood (47 mins)
Learn how to use every control on your drill. We start by showing you how to use the drill as a screwdriver and how to select drill bits to drill into wood. There is even a handy tip to help construct flatpacks quickly.
Session 3. Drilling into solid walls (35 mins)
Identify and tackle solid walls in your home. Demystify the world of wall fixings to hang light or heavy objects.
Session 4. Drilling into hollow walls (37mins)
Identify and tackle hollow walls. Learn how to hang hooks and shelves on plasterboard.
Session 5. Hanging other objects (18 mins)
We share lots of examples of extra hanging info using many types of fixings and show you lots of trade tips to help you gain confidence and independence along the way.
Practice Box
If you choose to purchase our Practice Box you won’t have to test your skills by drilling into your own walls. We can send you a box containing lots of the materials covered in the video.
We believe you will be excited to practice drilling straight away so we can offer you a practice box containing most of the materials that are used during our DIY DRILLS workshops. We know it’s daunting to drill into your precious abode so the box contains enough wood, plasterboard, tile and brick for you to experiment and experience.
We have also included wall fixings and the screws you need, brackets, a hook and a couple of extra treats for you.

Moira Tighe
Moira has built her own house and is an enthusiastic DIYer and an experienced teacher of both children and adults.
Besides having a great grasp on DIY, she has worked as freelance prop maker- creating puppets and carnival structures. Her love of materials and specialised techniques are shared in our workshops with patience, humour and know how.
