How Many Wives?

W.P Matthew appeared on Woman’s hour on 11 May 1950 with Barry Bucknell. They were discussing whether men should have more than one wife. This ‘humourous’ exchange brought together Barry Bucknell, who was better known for speaking on women’s matters and the DIY man introduced as W.P Matthews.
I have discovered that his first names were William Percival, but he is always referred to by his initials.

In the 1956  Introduction to ‘The Handyman’s ABC’, the publisher writes ‘Mr W.P Matthew is known throughout Britain for his down to earth, common sense advice on how to do things in and around the house. His radio talks, magazine articles and television appearances have won him a huge following of people who have learnt from experience that his knowledge is sound and practical’

Here, on Woman’s hour, we can share a glimpse into the minds of men in the 1950s (shudder) and a rare chance to hear the voice of ‘Radio Handyman’- W.P.Matthew.
