This is a content rich class and it will not be easy to catch up or redo a missed day, so please consider this when contemplating joining the course.
Suitable for: Absolute beginners. No prior experience in woodworking or woodcarving is required for this course.
About: A content-rich course learning to create a beautiful hinged-lid hardwood treasure box with drawers to hold tools or any precious objects you want to stow.
This is a content rich course over 12 weeks in a very small class size which includes:
Supervised use of woodwork machinery.
Learning how to use jigs and rods.
Finished box size W500 mm x D 295 x H350.
Solid wood carcass construction with birch and walnut plywood details.
Enjoy learning how to make a beautiful hinged-lid hardwood box with two drawers to hold tools or any precious objects you want to stow.
Expert furniture maker and tutor Christopher Burley will lead you through this unique course to be held on 12 full days at The Goodlife Centre.
This unique course developed so that you can learn the entire process and make your very own hardwood treasure box to a very high quality.
The course will begin with important Health and Safety know-how. You will learn some wood technology, practice with using the woodwork machinery and how to create ‘Jigs’ and ‘Rods to make woodwork more accurate and faster.
Preparation and process:
- Rough cut solid timber (carcass)
- Oversize cut birch plywood
- Planer and thicknesser – oversize for students to use the machine and finish machining to the final sizes –
- Preparing the veneer to be pressed onto mdf panels (students design) or, cutting the mdf pre veneered panel – oversize (top panel)
- Understanding jigs and how to build and use them (jig for cutting the grooves and hinges)
- Routering grooves for the top panel – Sanding inside before the gluing process –
Gluing process – Cutting the lid off (band saw or router)
- Routering the hinges slots
- Rough cut solid timber (drawers)
- Cutting grooves for the drawers to slide in and out, also, cutting the grooves for the bottom panels
- Designing the tray (separations)
- Finishing (satin osmo)
The use of all tools, machinery and materials is included.
If you want to choose and purchase your own hardware hinges or handles, please discuss with the tutor on the first day.

Chris has spent the last 12 years running a bespoke furniture business in South London, creating everything from small objects, freestanding furniture to fitted furniture and large commercial installations. Chris has joined the Goodlife team in teaching his extensive skills to our students.

Coffee, tea and biscuits are included in the course fee, but you will need to bring lunch with you or visit a nearby venue to purchase food.
Access
If you have any specific access or special needs, please contact us confidentially in advance by email info@thegoodlifecentre.co.uk. There is a small step to the entrance, and the toilet is on the ground floor.
All sewing workshops and occasionally lampshade making, tassel making and bookbinding workshops are located on the second floor. There is no lift access.
