Suitable for: Directed at those people who have completed one of our longer woodwork course, or those with confident woodwork skills.
About: During this course you will learn how to manage a practical project from sketching it, making a technical drawing, writing a cutting list, costing, marking out and construction to produce a piece of wood furniture.
Directed at those people who have completed one of our longer woodwork course, or those with confident woodwork skills, we offer a twelve day midweek opportunity to build an individual project.
During this course, run by experienced carpenter/joiner/furniture maker Ruth Thomson, you will learn how to manage a practical project from sketching it, making a technical drawing, writing a cutting list, costing, marking out and construction to produce a piece of wood furniture.
You will learn the safe use and versatility of a router, a biscuit jointer, a jigsaw and other power tools as needed and learn when and how to make jigs to help fabricate accurate shapes. Using basic workshop machines including a bandsaw and a belt sander, as well as classic hand tools, you will cut and assemble and then learn how to sand, glue and finish your project to completion.

The use of tools and machinery is included. Each learner will pay for their own materials.
We can take delivery of timber if externally sourced.
Please note that we can not handle MDF in the workshop as the dust requires special extraction and respiratory equipment.
Plywood or solid timber will be pre-machined for you on our planer thicknesser and table saw.
Ruth Thomson
Ruth Thomson is an experienced carpenter and enthusiastic teacher. She has headed carpentry departments teaching NVQ levels 1 and 2. Ruth enjoys teaching our basic carpentry as well as bespoke classes for children. She headed the build for our new workshop and wrote an impressive and accurate shopping list for 2 kilometres of wall studding and a ton of plasterboard. When not teaching, Ruth explores the countryside on her motorbike and plays guitar and piano. Not at the same time.
General Information

Refreshments
Coffee, tea and biscuits are included in the course fee, but you will need to bring lunch with you or visit a nearby venue to purchase food.
Access
If you have any specific access or special needs, please contact us confidentially in advance by email info@thegoodlifecentre.co.uk. There is a small step to the entrance, and the toilet is on the ground floor.
All sewing workshops and occasionally lampshade making, tassel making and bookbinding workshops are located on the second floor. There is no lift access.
