Project: Your own lamp
Now that lighting has become an art form, we are offering three weeknight evening workshop to ignite your creative side and help you design and make your own lamp. We will show you how to plan your project, how to select and construct materials that are stable and safe, how to wire up your structure, complete with a switch and although it may not win a place in the design museum, it will bring your enormous satisfaction and delight your friends.
We will lead you though all the processes and techniques to expand your imagination and set you on the track to success. Learners will discover the principles of design and proportion and how to set out and complete a project.
You can learn the techniques needed to assemble a lamp to take home with you from objects you bring with you and we will help you transform them into the light of your life…well, your home. Though not every object can be reinvented as a light, we are willing to give it a try. If you have a design in mind, email us a photo or sketch before the first workshop as it will help us inform you of some of the elements you may need.
Learn the safety aspects of electric lights by building a simple lighting circuit. Consider the design elements of your lamp and think through structure, stability, light diffusion and heat dispersal. Practice your making skills by learning how to drill into basic brick, tile and glass. This will help you consider the suitability of your aspirations. We will show you many of the fittings you might require for your project and point you towards suppliers.
Bring objects you would like to transform and start to assemble all the components you will need for your individual light. Remember, if some things need to be machined or modified, we can help with simple changes.
Complete your project and we can PAT test it for you. By now you will understand the principles of putting together a lamp by understanding the electrical circuit, the structural issues and connecting the components. We will also show you the principles of re-wiring a vintage lamp to bring it safely up to date.
We have some basic plugs, cable, lamp holders and objects you can use for practice. We stock some lovely 3 metre lengths of colourful woven flex and sell a small variety of bulbs, but as the subject is such a diverse one, we will give you a list of suppliers to source the individual elements for your lamp.
All personal protection, the use of tools and basic materials are included. Please note that not all objects you bring with you are guaranteed to be suitable and may get broken in the making process. We suggest you leave transforming family heirlooms until you have increased your confidence level.
Note- It may not be possible to complete a lamp if your project is complicated or very time consuming, but this course teaches you HOW to do it, and you may need to finish it at home.
