A comprehensive introduction to sewing machines, sewing and garment making for absolute beginners who would like to start making their own clothes.
No previous experience necessary though if you are familiar with a sewing machine, you may skip the first two weeks and jump straight in to Garment Making for Beginners.
Week 1 – Intro to the Sewing Machine
Learn how to thread a machine and start stitching within the hour! If you’d like the sewing machine to be instantly de-mystified and have always longed to create your own garments or soft furnishings, this is the perfect starting point for you.
Week 2 – Intro to the Sewing Machine
Covers a brief re-cap of threading the machine but then looking at different seams, hems and different sewing techniques and stitch types of the machine.
In small groups with lots of guidance and support from an experienced and qualified tutor, this is a short intensive course of practical exercises covering how to set up the machine, sew in straight lines, reversing and some of the machines different functions for a beginner to know.
Weeks 3-12 – Garment Making for Beginners
Learn how to take body measurements, alter a commercial pattern to fit, read a commercial pattern, lay out and cut fabric and construct a finished garment to a high standard using one of our Jenome 7275 and Bernina 1008 series sewing machines. There are a number of patterns to choose from which will be discussed with the tutor in the first session.
Classes are taught by an experienced and qualified tutor, in relaxed small groups. Teaching consists of demonstrations and group teaching as well as one-to-one and peer support.
Unlearn those self-taught shortcuts and make this the start of a new hobby/career in sewing or fashion!
We will be using our Brother, Bernina and Janome (Great British Sewing Bee) machines so you don’t have to bring your own. During the course you will be shown how to alter your own clothes. A good level of English and basic maths skills are useful.
