If the idea of carving a spoon appeals to you, but setting out into a muddy wood and starting your learning by wielding an axe seems somewhat daunting, we have devised a new one day course that will bypass all that and yet give you the immense satisfaction of watching a fully fledged spoon emerge from your handiwork.
Each spoon will be carved using seasoned wood and we will have a variety of species for you to choose, including Muranti – a rich, red wood, and Lime – a light, silky smooth and close grained wood.
Under the guidance of experienced carver Vic Phillips, you will spend the day learning about suitable wood selection, which tools to use and how to handle a knife in a safe and effective way. After cutting a blank of wood into a spoon shape with a hand coping saw, and then practicing classic spoon carving techniques, you will carve your own spoon following the clear steps to success. Vic is a patience and confident teacher, and this small class will allow you plenty of time and attention.
Because the wood is seasoned, you can finish your spoon with fine sanding and nourish it with a healthy linseed oil so that it can get to work straight away in the kitchen.
We supply all the tools and materials and can advise you on which simple tools to buy to carry on this fascinating hobby.
We have some of vic’s spoons at the centre for sale, but once people have held them in their hands, they tend to sell rather quickly.
