A comprehensive introduction to sewing with machines and garment making for absolute beginners who would like to start making their own clothes.
No previous experience necessary.
Week one and two is a great refresher if you haven’t sewed for a long time and want to learn the ‘proper’ way to use a machine.
Week 1 and 2: Intro to the Sewing Machine
Learn how to thread a machine and start stitching within the hour! If you’d like the sewing machine to be instantly de-mystified and have always longed to create your own garments or soft furnishings, this is the perfect starting point for you. Look at different seams, hems and different sewing techniques and stitch types of the machine. You will make a sample folder of useful seams and hems that may be used when making your project.
In small groups with lots of guidance and support from an experienced and qualified tutor, this is a short intensive course of practical exercises covering how to set up the machine, sew in straight lines, reversing and some of the machines different functions for a beginner to know.
Weeks 3-12: Garment Making for Beginners
Learn how to take body measurements, alter a commercial pattern to fit, read a commercial pattern, lay out and cut fabric and construct a finished garment to a high standard using one of our Janome 525s and Bernina 1008 series sewing machines. The choice of pattern will be discussed with the tutor in the third session. The course will also give you the skills to alter your own clothes.
Classes are taught in relaxed small groups in our light and airy first floor studio. Teaching consists of demonstrations and group teaching as well as lots of machine sewing and one-to-one and peer support.
Unlearn those self-taught shortcuts and make this the start of a new hobby/career in sewing or fashion!
A good level of English and basic math skills are useful. No need to bring anything to the first class.
