Suitable for absolute beginners. Enjoyable for everyone.
Do you love the look of all the quirky painted pieces of furniture in retro shops with boldly lettered stencils and tantalising paint techniques.? Do you have a tired piece of furniture that is beyond French polishing? Would you like to give your Scandinavian flat packs a touch of Va-Va Voom?
Unleash the artisan within with our one-day workshop.
A decorator in the nineteenth century was the highest paid of all the trades people. More than the cabinet maker. He knew the recipes and techniques to produce classic effects including wood graining and combing and his artistry was in high demand. If you visit Brighton pavilion you may marvel at the plumbing pipes – impressively painted to imitate bamboo to great effect.
During the workshop, you will practice how to prepare various surfaces – even shiny melamine – so that all your hard work in decorating your project won’t peel or flake off. Learn the basics of sandpaper, primers and undercoats. Practice getting the correct surface before painting.
We show you how to select and use a paint brush so that the correct amount of paint goes on the furniture and not all over you. You will also learn how to take care of your paint brushes. You will practice on our pieces of furniture so that you know how to paint methodically and successfully.
We will guide you through various techniques using modern water based paints to get a gloss or flat surface or the ‘chalk paint’ look. The finishes can be used to embellish all of your treasured pieces – from stools to a chest of drawers. Have fun experimenting with wood grain rollers, glazes and various specialist brushes on flat and curved services. Experiment with stencils and simple transfer printing. See what you can do with the effects of gold leaf and metallic and coloured waxes.
Want to learn how to create a distressed antique look? We can show you how to get the ‘shabby chic’ look with low priced paints.
You will take home a sampler panel and a photo frame you have made to inspire your home finishing. You might be spurred on to repaint your entire house!
Beginners welcome. The use of all tools and materials is included.
